Unsane and Melvins

Unfortunately, today's review will have to be short and sweet because the last few weeks of school are here and I'm freaking out trying to get everything finished. So anyway, Friday night I saw Unsane and Melvins play at Mohawk. The show was awesome and rowdy and both bands were badass, as I was hoping (and expecting) they would be. Vinny Signorelli, the usual drummer from Unsane has been unable to play this tour so Melvin's drummers Dale Crover and Coady Willis filled in for him. More pics will be up on the Rank and Revue site soon, so be sure to check it out!

PiLLCRUSHER and Rottenness

Finally there was a good show on Friday! Maybe everyone's been too tired from sx or something but I haven't heard of much going on in the past month. So anyway, I had the good fortune of seeing PiLLCRUSHER and Rottenness at Dirty Dog on Friday. Disfigured, VBT (see post here: Disfigured, Vaginal Bear Trap, Scattered Remains), Morgengrau and Emperial Massacre also played. PiLLCRUSHER, who hail from San Antonio have created some very distinct, bluesy doom metal music. Beer Reebs, from Hod (post here: Hod), captivated the audience with his unmistakable snarl, while Mando Tovar, from Las Cruces (post here: Mala Suerte, Las Cruces), graced us with his heavy, almost soulful, sound on guitar. Badass bassist Marilyn Monroe held down the rhythm section with drummer Jude Ortiz who clearly enjoyed imparting his creative ability with everyone. I wouldn't call their music catchy, but it definitely sticks with you and is instantly recognizable. Mexican death/grind metal band Rottenness headlined the show. Brutal would probably be the best word to describe them. They literally did not stop headbanging and jumping around the stage for their entire set. Their extremely fast songs and abrasive vocals kept everyone enthralled. Their lack of a bassist was interesting, although I didn't think it detracted from their music at all Apparently, they had gotten stranded here last year so I'm glad they braved the return trip in order to captivate us with their awesome music.
